Culture and Drug Profiling of Patient Derived Malignant Pleural Effusions for Personalized Cancer Medicine

A research article published recently by C. Ruiz and Co-Authors, University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, describes the development of a systematic approach for the in-vitro culture of malignant pleural effusions (MPEs) to analyze effects of chemotherapeutics and targeted drugs.

Growth characteristics of ex-vivo cultured MPEs were monitored in real-time using xCELLigence. In vitro drug tests with targeted therapeutics (Erlotinib) or chemotherapeutics were performed based on oncologists recommendations, measuring cell growth in real-time. Experiments revealed dose-dependent and specific growth inhibitory effects of targeted drugs - in a personalized manner.
