Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy: In-vitro testing the chemosensitivity of peritoneal cancer cell lines using CASY

J. Weinreich et al. report in a recent paper (Investigational New Drugs, from experiments comparing experimental duplex drugs to standard cytostatic drug regimens against peritoneal cancer cell lines.

The authors emphasize the need for experimental data regarding chemosensitivity in peritoneal metastasis due to the fact that current intraperitoneal chemotherapy lack standardization and predictability. This study contributes these data by monitoring the chemosensitivity of colorectal, gastric, and ovarian cancer cell lines.

Furthermore, a new candidate drug for intraperitoneal use, a duplex drug (5FdU-ECyd) was investigated.

CASY was used to accurately determine cell count and viability of the target tumor cells exposed to various drugs. Effect of drugs was evaluated as percentage of cell growth compared to initial concentration.

The authors conclude that novel conjugates might be used as alternative agents or as supplements in intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Testing the response to drugs in vitro, an ultimate goal would be to guide decision-making for chemotherapy in patients with peritoneal metastasis from gastrointestinal primary tumors.
